Angels owner Arte Moreno told Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times that he has made Adrian Beltre "what [the Angels] believe is a significant offer." Beltre and agent Scott Boras, who also reportedly fielded an offer from the A’s, have not accepted Moreno’s proposal.

Moreno denies that the Angels made Carl Crawford a formal pitch before he signed with the Red Sox.

"There were rumors out there, but we never made an official offer, and no parameters were discussed," Moreno said.

Moreno says that GM Tony Reagins "never had the chance" to make the left fielder a proposal, since by the time the Angels met with him at the Winter Meetings, he already had a deal.

If what Reagins and Moreno are saying is true about Crawford, that is a real head-scratcher.

You'd think that Crawford (or at least his agent) would have drawn up some sort of a bidding contest using the offer from the Red Sox as a starting point.

But that's in the past, at least we made what's hopefully a substantial offer. We can really use him at third base.

The offer to Beltre is believed to be in the five-year, $70MM range according to Mike DiGiovanna of The Los Angeles Times. It has not been accepted and is unlikely to be increased.

$14 a year for Beltre and he's not yet taking it? How much does he think he deserves to earn?

Wow, that's a generous offer from the Angels (in my opinion). I certainly can't fault them if Beltre asks for more.

I can't really see any other team challenging our offer though. I guess the A's might, but not many teams have the incentive to make such an offer.

Angels pull their offer to Beltre

Quote:
2:35pm: The Angels pulled their offer to Beltre but have not shut any doors on him, reports DiGiovanna.

1:13pm: We learned Friday that the Angels' offer to free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre is believed to be in the five-year, $70MM range, with the player seeking a sixth year. The Halos' offer is "not likely to be increased," Mike DiGiovanna wrote at the time. Beltre himself told Scott Lauber earlier this month that the years are the most important factor.

Scott Boras seeks the sixth year, or at least something in the $85-90MM range on a five-year deal according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal says the Angels "are not angry to the point they were two years ago, when they publicly withdrew from the negotiations for Mark Teixeira."

Rosenthal adds that the Rangers are not active in the bidding, making the Angels' competition unclear. A month ago Beltre was said to have a dozen suitors, but many teams have filled third base holes since then. I think Boras could probably find several clubs willing to go to five years and $60MM or so, but there is no evidence the Angels need to increase their offer.

Not mad at the Angels for this. That offer is definitely a generous one... he's no worth more than that.

Sadly, the Angels are in this situation because they took too long to strike. If another consecutive offseason like this happens, I really want Reagins out. Reagins arrived late in the Winter Meetings, and that just might have costed us Crawford.

I've already grown tired of Reagins, I wouldn't feel an ounce of sympathy for him if he's let go.

However, I can't necessarily pass blame to the front office in this situation. It doesn't appear that there are any other serious bidders for Beltre, let alone ones who would match our offer. I think a key note here is that the Angels haven't closed discussions.

Doh- well maybe this is just a stage in the negotiations. I think it was pulled so that Boras can't go to another team and say beat that offer and you got him.

^ Yeah, but we shouldn't be in this situation in the first place.

Just poor execution on his part. I mean, right now, he's just scraping the barrel for whats left. We also now have no DH. Who are we gonna sign? Washed up Damon? No wait.... he's "too expensive". I got a better idea. Reagins is gonna be "confident" it'll work out with Bourjos in there.

I also, don't anticipate a trade for us to get better. If that, it happens in the mid-season, not OFFseason. He sort of reminds me of Mitch Kupchak. But difference is, Mitch had a plan for us to get better. He had a legitimate prospect. Here, its just strictly money. This asshole doesn't wanna invest how he has to. If you notice, all our signings the past few years, have been bargains. This Beltre offer, is the exception.

My story of becoming an Angels fan, is really funny. But this asshole is slowly making me grow more and more frustrated with this beloved team, and I know they don't control the front office. Its that cheapskate, despite Moreno CLEARLY stating he wants to spend.

A source insisted to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick that the Angels still want to sign Beltre.

What do you guys think about Manny Ramirez for DH?

^ I actually like that. 1 year deal wouldn't hurt.

If it doesnt work out, release him, and address it in the midseason.
