Former Angels first baseman Casey Kotchman was placed on the bereavement list by the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday and left the team to be with his mother who has been hospitalized with an undisclosed medical condition.
Apparently, Kotchman got the news of this sudden illness following the Braves’ game in New York Tuesday night and called Braves manager Bobby Cox after midnight to let him know he would be leaving the team and heading to Florida.
Kotchman’s mother is the principal of an elementary school in Florida. His father, Tom, is manager of the Angels’ rookie league team in Orem, Utah and a long-time minor-league coach, manager and scout in the Angels’ system.
